Bump Past Cut Up Through Windows (Nasturtium)

Paul Clipson (in person) - Super 8 Experimental 2004 4:50 min San Francisco, CA

An exploration of notions of size, space and perspective, lost in the depths of nature’s vast architecture, and wrapped within the rhythmic framework of a soundtrack by Tarentel. Clusters of tiny green nasturtium dance, dissolving into towering processions of palm leaves, translucent in form, that reach up to the sun, while below this intimate immensity, moves a restless consciousness, wandering through a multilayered passageway of cloverleaves. This improvised collage of in-camera edits, dissolves and double exposures is propelled by Tarentel’s percussive dialogue between drums and piano, and droning harmonium and saxophone.

Paul Clipson is a San Francisco-based artist working in film, video, and works on paper. In the past year in the Bay Area, he has exhibited drawings, experimental films and video installations in solo and group shows. For the past three years, he has worked in close collaboration with the band Tarentel, screening films with their performances on the West Coast, as well as on tour in Italy, Switzerland and Japan.
